Personality: Darunia is a fellow of intense emotion - it's not often that he does subtle or low-key emotions. When you first meet him, he's very angry - and reasonably so since his people are starving and his hands are tied in regards to what to do about it. When Link figures out how to cheer him up after talking to the other Gorons, Darunia doesn't just have a mood lift. He breaks out into an intense dance. And once Link clears out Dodongo's Cavern for the Gorons, he's overcome with glee, pride, and thankfulness - enough that when he pats Link on the head, he knocks the poor kid flat on his face. He seems scary and imposing, but he's one of the best and most loyal friends a person could ask for.

On that note, he seems to be a rather openly affectionate person to the people he likes - hearty pats for Link, and an attempt to give the boy a hug after declaring him to be his Sworn Brother. He also takes friendship very seriously, but he knows when to get down to business - once he crosses paths with Link again after the seven-year period, he's happy to see his Sworn Brother again, but he insists there's no time to catch up. His people are in danger again, and he entrusts their safety to Link, even after having heard nothing from him in seven years. However, getting him to like you may take some time. Like most Gorons, Darunia is slow to trust an outsider.

Darunia is very boisterous, and has great pride about his people and himself, referring to himself in the third person a fair bit - usually accompanied by a descriptor. He also shows little restraint in referring to himself as "the big boss of the Gorons" repeatedly, and when he's first met, he takes great offense that the King of Hyrule, another Sworn Brother of his, would send a child to him as a messenger. As proud as he is, it's not a bad thing - he cares a great deal for his people, and when push comes to shove, he steps up.

He's also able to see the bigger picture about things. Despite Ganondorf's threats, he did not yield when the Gerudo demanded the Goron's Ruby from him. He knew it would be best to wait for a messenger from the Royal Family. (At least, he thought this was the best course of action, unaware that this was playing into Ganondorf's scheme to get the Triforce.) Years later, when Ganondorf captured his people to feed them to the dragon Volvagia - for someone who cares as much about his people, he deemed the best course of action was not to free his people first, but to take on the dragon. He did this because if the dragon were to get free, Hyrule would be reduced to a scorched wasteland. He failed in this respect, and Link wound up being the one who saved his people and slayed the dragon, but Darunia at least made a wise decision about his course of action. This gave Link the time he needed to do his job, and in the process awaken Darunia as the Sage of Fire.

Abilities: As the Sage of Fire, Darunia has a connection to "the fire spirits" and to Death Mountain, though that's pretty vague. He's able to grant magical assistance to Link in ...ambiguous ways that involve helping break down barriers, helping build a bifrostmagical rainbow bridge, and helping to seal Ganondorf away. He's also got the wisdom of prior sages of fire, but we don't really see much of what that does.

As a Goron, Darunia is long-lived, incredibly tough, heat-resiliant, and has a great amount of physical strength. He's able to curl in a ball and roll around, and can endure long falls without taking damage as well as intense heat that would make a human or hylian require protective clothing.

Also he eats rocks and metal, and drinks lava like a boss. And he can cut a rug and make it bleed.
